EID UL-FITR

inter faith solidary

Eid ul-Fitr marks the end of the fasting period of Ramadan and the first day of the following month, after another new moon has been sighted. Eid ul-Fitr means the Festival of Breaking the Fast. Food is donated to the poor, everyone put on  new clothes, and  prayers are held in the early morning. On 14th of this month, Muslim brothers celebrate Eid ul-Fitr.

Five Pillars of Islam are the five duties incumbent on every Muslim. These duties are Shahadah, Salah, Zakah, Sawm and Hajj. The Shahadah is the basic tenet of Islam to testify that there is  God Allah and that  Prophet Muhammad (Sallallaahu Alyhi Wasallam - Peace be upon Him) is the messenger of Allah.  The second pillar of Islam is Salah, prayers five times a day at fixed times. Zakah is the practice of charity. Sawm (fasting)  is an obligatory act during the month of Ramadan. Islamic belief is that "The Satan runs in the circulatory system of the son of Adam in the same way blood circulates in our system; so tighten his passages with hunger". Muslims  abstain from food, drink and sexual intercourse from dawn to dusk during this month and are to be especially mindful of other sins. All pre-and extra-marital relations are strictly forbidden in Islam. The fast is meant to allow Muslims to seek nearness to Allah, to express their gratitude to and dependence on him,  to atone for their past sins and to remind them of the needy and downtrodden.

Ramzan (also called Ramadan) is the ninth month of the Islamic (Hijri) calendar, established in the year 638CE.  Prophet Muhammad (Sallallaahu Alyhi Wasallam) was revealed Qur'an by the angel Jibril in the  month of  Ramadan. During Ramazan,  Muslims are also expected to put more effort into following the teachings of Islam by refraining from violence, anger, envy, greed, lust, harsh language and gossip. Fasting means letting nothing pass the lips: no food, drink, chewing gum, tobacco smoke  from sunrise to sunset.    In addition, all obscene and irreligious sights and sounds are to be avoided.  The Holly Qur'an is regularly recited. Little children, patients, elderly people and pregnant or breast feeding women are exempt from fasting. Observing fasts is not permitted for menstruating women. Travelers and those in combat need  not have to fast. The Hajj is a pilgrimage to Mecca. Shia Muslims consider eight pillars of Islam, which includes the five above.

namaz is islamic prayer

All religions emphasize the importance of fasting. Shivarathri of the Hindus, Lent of Christians fall into this category. When there are so many common factors in all the religions why do the people hate each other? It is true that all the religions are not the same! There are specialties in each of them. Most of us are religiously ignorant.  We neither know our own religion nor that of the neighbor. We are Hindus, Muslims or Christians by birth and not be choice. A religious Hindu or a Muslim can not hate others.

Some advocate religious tolerance — as we tolerate a drunken man!  Tolerance is compromising. One should understand inter-faith beliefs. Tolerance is bound to give away but understanding would not! Doesn't your heart rejoice when you see a large gathering worshipping the same, Almighty Lord?  Can there be two, three or more Almighty Gods — one for Hindus, one for Christians and yet another for Muslims?

Broad minded attitude is required

To that God who prevails in fire, in water and  in all plants as well as in all living beings, I salute.
